History of our Congregation
Blessed Mother Marie Therese was born in Liege on February 28 th 1782. Her father was
secretary to the Prince Bishop. She lived most of her life and time caring for the poor. This was a
decisive turning point in Jeanne’s life. After the years of trial and sorrow, it was the cross which
attracted her as the outstanding sign of the everlasting love of God for each of his children. She
felt drawn to respond to this prodigal, generous love by seeing and serving Christ in all she met.
Because Jeanne Haze could not find around her the means for which she was searching, slowly
the idea of a new foundation took shape. She was ready for whatever the service of God
demanded, fashioned as she had always been open to the will of God and the need of the
environment. In faith and hope she went ahead with the idea of a new religious family.
The new congregation began on September 8 th 1833 when Jeanne Haze who was now called
Mother Marie Therese along with her companions pronounced their wows , becoming the
Daughters of the Cross, the title she had long since chosen. As early as 1851, the congregation
spread to Germany. In 1862, the first sisters sailed for India.
The Congregation has continued to spread and to respond to many needs. At present the
congregation has houses in Nepal, Italy, Ireland, The United States, Pakistan, Brazil and Africa.
The Catholic School is a learning community animated by the Divine Spirit of Love and
Freedom of and living the Gospel values. While concerned primarily with the all-round
development of Catholic students, it shares Christ’s concern for the liberation and fullness of life
of all people, especially of those in greatest need. Young people of any religious family find
scope within their own cultural milieu, to reflect on their lives in the light of their faith and to
develop ,not only in knowledge and skills but also in the wisdom which is the fruit of reflection
on life and its lessons.
We, the Daughters of the Cross are Christian religious women followers of Jesus Christ. , we hail
Him as our Master and Lord. The congregation exists on Jesus’ aims and goal. His liberation of
all people with no distinction of caste or creed is our task too.
